Every man wants to nail his proposal. Lots of planning goes into it to make sure everything runs smoothly. Some men like to be really dramatic and throw a big event, others want to keep it small and intimate. This man chose the latter, though he waited a lot longer than most men before he asked the question as he also happened to give her the ring, a whole year before! Read on to find out exactly what this romantic did.
One of the best parts of a surprise proposal is the pure shock on the partner’s face and Terry went above and beyond to make sure that his girlfriend received a big surprise. He explains
I had always loved the idea of giving someone a gift where they didn’t know its true value. I also wanted to start doing wood carving.
Combining the two ideas together, Terry, from Australia, came up with a brilliant plan.
The plan was, to create a necklace, which he would carve himself. Inside the necklace, he would hide an engagement ring and seal it, until the time was right.
Terry bought the perfect ring and spent ages crafting the necklace around it. He gave it to Anna on their first anniversary.
Anna was in love with the necklace and she wore it every day, not taking it off even once.
Terry said the necklace brought some concerns along with it too.
There were some occasions where I was really worried. At one point, I thought she was going to trade it with a blacksmith at a market (the blacksmith loved the necklace, and she loved the blacksmith’s work) but luckily I didn’t need to crash tackle her.
Of course, with Anna completely oblivious to what was inside it, he was worried about airport security.
My biggest moment of panic was when we went through airport security the first time. I hadn’t thought about the fact that she might be asked to put it through the X-Ray, which could have very quickly turned into an airport security proposal!
Despite all of Terry’s worries, the necklace was safe for a whole year, allowing him to ask the question on their second anniversary.
For their anniversary, they took a trip to Smoo Cave in Scotland. They had been wanting to go since they got together.
However, before they entered the cave, Terry asked if he could take some photos of the necklace next to some nearby rocks. While Anna wasn’t looking, Terry broke the strong seal with a knife. After setting the camera up on a self-timer, he ran back to her.
Terry held the necklace in one hand, got down on one knee and broke the necklace open to reveal the ring.
Terry said her reaction was incredible.
She stood there dazed for a second, trying to work out what was going on. Then it dawned and she said “yes”.
After she calmed down she suddenly stopped moving, stared at me and said “Wait… it’s been in there the entire time?!! I could have lost it you f***ing idiot!!
She was quite a hilarious mix of happy and angry!
